Description

Postcard Oberbaumbrücke

The Oberbaumbrücke (Upper Tree Bridge in English) is located in Berlin Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg.

I drew this urban sketch on the 5th of November 2009 directly at the location.
As a technique I applied wash drawing. So as artistic tools I used for this illustration:

  • my sketch book (Watercolour Paper “Montval”, Format 30 x 30 cm -11,8″ x 11,8″-, 300 g/m2 -140 lb-)
  • my calligraphic pen (“Pilot Parallel Pen”- 2.4 mm)
  • 2 paint brushes (fine and medium)
  • water
  • dry pastels

I was sitting front of the Spree river on the bank May-Ayim-Ufer. I was sitting front of the Spree river on the bank May-Ayim-Ufer. It turned autumn with multicoloured flora in this place.
I used only 3/4 of an hour for this illustration and I had to finish the work with the color at home because the rain was coming!

On the left of the postcard Oberbaumbrücke, inside the red bridge, we see the yellow building of Universal Music.
This illustration is also on my blog “Traversée d’Encres” (“Through The Inks”).

It is a double-deck bridge crossing Berlin’s river Spree, considered to be one of the city’s landmarks. It links Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, former boroughs that were divided by the Berlin Wall, and has become an important symbol of Berlin’s unity.
The lower deck of the bridge carries a roadway, which connects Oberbaum Straße to the south of the river with Warschauer Straße to the north. The upper deck of the bridge carries Berlin U-Bahn line U1/U12, from Warschauer Straße to the station Schlesisches Tor.

The bridge appears prominently in the 1998 film Run Lola Run.

Since 1999, the traditional rivalry between the traditionally left-leaning boroughs Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain is played out in the annual “water battle”, where residents from both areas, organized in groups with satirical names, pelt each other with rotten vegetables, jello, eggs, flour and water and try to symbolically “reconquer” the “renegade” other borough by driving their participants from the bridge.
