Description

Postcard Tempelhofer Feld

The Postcard Tempelhofer Feld Berlin represents the parc of Tempelhof, the old airport. It’s located in two quarters of Berlin: “Neukölln” and “Tempelhof-Schöneberg”.

I drew this urban sketch on the 30th of April 2011 directly at the location in Berlin-Neukölln.

As a technique I applied wash drawing. And as artistic tools I used for the Postcard Tempelhofer Feld Berlin:

  • my sketch book (Watercolour Paper- fine grain, Format 31 x 22 cm -12,20″ x 8,66″-, 280 g/m2 -140 lb-)
  • my calligraphic pen (“Pilot Parallel Pen”- 2.4 mm)
  • 2 paint brushes (fine and medium)
  • water

I was sitting in the grass, close from the entry of the park at “Oderstr.”. It was beautiful weather at the beginning of spring.
I just needed one hour. As I wanted to show only an impression of the atmosphere of this park, I left a lot of space in order to suggest the peaceful sensation of this area.
The former Tempelhof airport is now a public park in the center of the city, which is still one of those places reassigned, typical Berlin, where it advocates the  wind, freedom and deliverance … the sunset is so beautiful there!

This illustration is also on my blog “Traversée d’Encres” (“Through The Inks”).

On the postcard Tempelhofer Feld, on the left we see some cyclists who are having a break in the Tempelhofer Feld. Some kites float in the sky. In the middle, we can observe some installations and on the right, the control tower of the old airport.

At the beginning of the 1920s, Tempelhof airport was built on the site. After the airport closed in 2008, the city of Berlin reclaimed the 1,5 square miles open space and one of the world’s largest buildings in a central location for public use. Today, the area has a big cycling, skating and jogging trail, a huge BBQ area, a dog-walking field and an enormous picnic area for all visitors.
The buildings of the old airport was used for some events and concerts, and now as an emergency refugee camp.
