Description

Big Poster Gedächtniskirche Berlin

The format of the poster Gedächtniskirche Berlin is vertical (23×56 cm / 9×22 inch).
It represents the famous avenue Kudamm or “Kurfürstendamm” with the church “Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche” (in the background) .

I drew this urban sketch on the 18th of September 2009 directly at the location in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
As a technique I applied wash drawing. And as artistic tools I used for this illustration:

  • a sketch book (Watercolour Paper ” GS “- fine grain, Format 31,5 x 23 cm -12,40″ x 9,05”-, 280 g/m2 -140 lb-)
  • a calligraphic pen (“Pilot Parallel Pen”- 2.4 mm)
  • 2 paint brushes (fine and medium)

This illustration is also on my blog “Traversée d’Encres”.

The original church on the site was built in the 1890s. It was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943.
The present building, which consists of a church with an attached foyer and a separate belfry with an attached chapel, was built between 1959 and 1963.
The damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall.
The Memorial Church today is a famous landmark of western Berlin, and is nicknamed by Berliners der hohle Zahn, meaning “the hollow tooth” (Source: Wikipedia).
