Description

Postcard Bode-Museum

This postcard Bode-Museum Berlin is vertical and represents the museum of Bode. It’s located on the Museum Island (german: Museum Insel) in the central Mitte district of Berlin, Germany, the site of the old city of Cölln.

I drew this urban sketch on the 25th of May 2010 directly at the location in Berlin-Mitte.

As a technique I applied wash drawing.
Some artistic tools that I used for the illustration of the postcard Bode-Museum Berlin:

  • my sketch book (Watercolour Paper- fine grain, Format 31 x 22 cm -12,20″ x 8,66″-, 280 g/m2 -140 lb-)
  • my calligraphic pen (“Pilot Parallel Pen”- 2.4 mm)
  • 2 paint brushes (fine and medium)
  • water

I was sitting on a wall by the bank of the Spree river. In the background of the postcard Bode-Museum, we can see the Nikolai-Viertel, close to the place Alexanderplatz where we recognize the TV tower. In the foreground on the left, a little boy sits on the bank. He was close to me and the river, but he didn’t stay for a long time. I needed around one hour for this urban sketch.
This illustration is also on my blog “Traversée d’Encres”.

The Bode-Museum is a historically preserved building. The museum was designed by architect Ernst von Ihne and completed in 1904. Originally called the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum after Emperor Frederick III, the museum was renamed in honour of its first curator, Wilhelm von Bode, in 1956.

Museum Island (German: Museumsinsel) is the name of the northern half of an island in the Spree river. It is so called from the complex of five internationally significant museums, all part of the Berlin State Museums: The Altes Museum (Old Museum), The Alte Nationalgalerie, The Pergamon Museum and The Bode Museum. In 1999, the museum complex was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
